Scaffolding in Beaconsfield, Gerrards Cross & Amersham

South Buckinghamshire is about forty-five minutes from our yard at Enslow and it is unlike anywhere else we work. Large detached houses on generous plots, almost all of it Green Belt, and a standard of finish that means the scaffold has to be as tidy as the building it is against.

Green Belt pushes the work down and back, not out

Nearly all of South Bucks sits in Metropolitan Green Belt, which puts a hard ceiling on how far a house can be extended outwards. The result is that the work goes down and backwards instead — basement digs, deep rear extensions, full-width loft conversions and wrap-arounds. For us that changes two things. The scaffold often stands next to an open excavation, so the base design has to account for ground that is about to be dug out beside it. And the programme is long: a basement and rear extension is months, not weeks, and the quotation needs to say so rather than running on extensions.

Beaconsfield

Two towns in one. The Old Town — London End, Aylesbury End, Wycombe End and Windsor End — is a conservation area full of listed frontages sitting straight onto the pavement, so highway licences and fixings into joints. The New Town around the station is interwar and post-war detached stock on big plots, where the work is extensions, basements and re-roofs.

Gerrards Cross

Largely Edwardian and interwar, much of it arts-and-crafts influenced, on some of the largest residential plots in the county. Long elevations, deep setbacks and mature trees to work around. A lot of the roads here are private, which matters — see below.

Amersham

Old Amersham along the High Street is medieval and Georgian, listed and tight. Amersham-on-the-Hill is Metroland — 1930s semis and detached houses with proper side access, where the work is loft conversions, re-roofs and solar. Two completely different jobs under one name.

Chalfonts & Stoke Poges

Chalfont St Peter, Chalfont St Giles and Stoke Poges — village stock mixed with substantial modern housing, generous plots and good access. Straightforward work, and the sort of job we can usually get to quickly.

Private roads are not council roads

A good deal of Gerrards Cross and parts of Beaconsfield sit on privately owned and maintained roads. If the scaffold needs to stand on the verge, the footway or the carriageway there, the permission does not come from the council at all — it comes from the residents’ association or the estate company that owns the road, and they have their own rules, their own notice periods and sometimes their own insurance requirements. People discover this on the morning of the erection. Find out whose road it is at quotation stage and it is a non-event.

Who you need a licence from

On adopted roads, Buckinghamshire Council handles it. It has been a unitary authority since 2020, so the same body deals with the highway licence and the planning side — one application rather than two. Parts of the area also sit inside the Chilterns National Landscape, which does not stop work but does tighten what is acceptable on visible elevations.

Finish matters more here

These are expensive houses with expensive brick, render, stone and clay tile, and often landscaping that cost more than the extension. We sheet and protect properly, we keep the lifts boarded and clean, and we take the ties out and make good rather than leaving a line of plugged holes across a front elevation. It is not a premium service, it is just how the job should be done — but it is worth saying, because it is the most common complaint we hear about whoever came before us.

What we put up here

  • Basement and deep rear extensions — long-duration access designed around an open dig.
  • Domestic — loft conversions, re-roofs, chimneys, rendering, repointing and solar.
  • Listed and conservation work — Old Beaconsfield and Old Amersham frontages.
  • Temporary roofs — weather protection spanning up to 40 metres, which on a months-long rebuild pays for itself.
  • Commercial — shops and offices that stay open and trading.
