The old county council was abolished in 2009. What replaced it is three separate unitary authorities: Bedford Borough Council, Central Bedfordshire Council and Luton Borough Council. Each runs its own highways function.
In practice that means a pavement licence in Bedford, one in Biggleswade and one in Luton are three different applications to three different authorities. Biggleswade, Sandy, Ampthill, Flitwick, Dunstable, Houghton Regis and Leighton Buzzard all sit under Central Bedfordshire. If the scaffold is going anywhere near a public footpath, say so early — the licence, not the scaffold, is usually what sets the start date.
What we see in Bedfordshire
Victorian terraces
Bedford and Luton have long runs of terraced housing. Shared boundaries, rear access through alleyways and pavement frontages are the usual constraints, and often the reason a licence is needed.
Market towns
Ampthill, Woburn and Biggleswade have older centres with listed and conservation-area property, where fixings and appearance both need thinking about.
The A1 and M1 corridors
Large commercial and logistics stock, where the work is usually cladding, roof maintenance or refurbishment on tall, simple elevations — well suited to system scaffold and temporary roofs.
New housing
Significant growth around Biggleswade, Houghton Regis, Wixams and Leighton Buzzard, with the usual new-estate constraints of tight plots and unfinished ground.

- Temporary roofs — spanning up to 40 metres, craned in or on a rolling track, sheeted in keder, corrugated iron, aluminium cladding or shrink wrap. Worth the trip for us, and usually the reason Bedfordshire customers call.
- Events and media — bespoke structures for television and event production.
How we work
Free site visit and quotation. CISRS-qualified scaffolders working to TG20 and SG4. RAMS and a job-specific toolbox talk before work starts. Statutory inspections at least every seven days while the scaffold is in use, and after anything that could affect its stability. Advanced CHAS accredited, and Oxfordshire Prestige Awards Scaffold Company of the Year four years running.
